چکیده

Among the chlorophycean algae the members of the family Ulvaceae are characterized by a multicellular structure and a haplo-diplontic life-cycle that proceeds without formation of special generative organs. The transformation in these algae of ordinary vegetative cells into generative ones producing either gametes mitotically or zoospores meiotically was a major reason for introducing Ulva mutabilis Foyn as an object for the biochemical study of meiosis (Nordby & Hoxmark, 1972). In this connexion it was felt necessary to carry out a closer examination of the cytology of the 2 kinds of generative divisions mentioned. In the literature, the generative divisions in Ulva species have been partly described by Carter (1926), Feyn (1934), Smith (1947) and Yabu & Park (1969). The most detailed description of the nuclear events is given by Feyn, who also was the first to show that genetic segregation took place during meiosis in this alga. For Ulva mutabilis specifically, short electron-microscopical descriptions have been given by Braten (1971), Braten & Levlie (1968) and Braten & Nordby (1973). Of studies on related algae, the most extensive report is probably that of Ramanathan (1939) on Enteromorpha. The present report concerns only the gametophytes and diploid sporophytes. The parthenosporophytes are dealt with elsewhere (Hoxmark & Nordby, 1974).

Regulation of gametogenesis and zoosporogenesis in Ulva linza (Chlorophyta): comparison with Ulva mutabilis and potential for laboratory culture

Green Ulvophyte macroalgae represent attractive model systems for understanding growth, development, and evolution. They are untapped resources for food, fuel, and high-value compounds, but can also form nuisance blooms. To fully analyze green seaweed morphogenesis, controlled laboratory-based culture of these organisms is required. To date, only a single Ulvophyte species, Ulva mutabilis Føyn,...

The ultrastructure of fertilization and zygote formation in the green alga Ulva mutabilis Foyn.

Fertilization and zygote formation in the multicellular green alga Ulva mutabilis Foyn were studied with the aid of transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The growth mutant 'slender' was used in this investigation. The initial contact between mating gametes is made by the flagella, whereupon cytoplasmic contact is established within a few seconds. Fusion of the cytoplasm of the 2 cells...

Ultrastructure of meiosis and centriole behaviour in Ulva mutabilis Foyn.

The present work deals with the ultrastructure of the meiotic processes leading to the formation of zoospores. The formation of an exit pore on the outer surface of the sporangium is the first visible sign that the cell will undergo meiosis and not just a somatic division. Prophase I nuclei differ from nuclei in mitotic prophase by having one or several invaginations of the nuclear membrane. El...

Ultrastructural localization of phosphohydrolases in gametes, zygotes and zoospores of Ulva mutabilis Foyn.

Gametes, zoospores, and zygotes of the multicellular, green alga Ulva mutabilis showed acid phosphatase reaction product in Golgi vesicles and on the membrane lining the vacuole. In addition gametes and zoospores showed enzyme reaction product on the entire surface membrane including the flagellar membrane. The surface membrane enzyme activity disappears from the zygote shortly after copulation...

Bacteria-induced morphogenesis of Ulva intestinalis and Ulva mutabilis (Chlorophyta): a contribution to the lottery theory

The green marine macroalgae of the class Ulvophyceae (Ulvophytes) are common algae distributed worldwide particularly in intertidal areas, which play a key role in aquatic ecosystems. They are potentially valuable resources for food, animal feed and fuel but can also cause massive nuisance blooms. Members of Ulvaceae, like many other seaweeds, harbour a rich diversity of epiphytic bacteria with...
